Texas Rio Red Grapefruit: What Makes It Different and How to Enjoy It

Texas Rio Red grapefruit has a deep pink to red flesh and a sweet flavor with just enough tang. It is grown in the Rio Grande Valley in the southern tip of Texas, and the season runs through the cooler months of the year.

What is a Rio Red?

Rio Red is a red grapefruit variety that is a favorite in Texas citrus country. It is known for its color and for being sweeter than many grapefruit you find at the store.

Why we do not de-green

Many large suppliers expose citrus to gas after harvest to change the color of the rind, a process called de-greening. We do not. That means some of our grapefruit may show green patches or small blemishes on the skin. This is normal and does not change the ripeness, flavor or quality inside. It is simply what tree-ripened fruit looks like.

How to store grapefruit

  • Counter: a few days to a week at room temperature, away from direct sun.
  • Refrigerator: keeps the fruit fresh for a few weeks. Let it warm up a little before eating for the best flavor.

How to cut one without the mess

Slice off the top and bottom. Stand it up and cut away the peel and white pith in strips, following the curve. Then slice between the membranes to release each segment. Squeeze the leftover membrane for the juice.

Ways to enjoy it

  • Broiled with a little brown sugar or honey
  • In salads with avocado, fennel or pecans
  • Juiced, or in cocktails and sparkling water
  • Segments over yogurt or oatmeal

A dozen arrives in a ready-to-go gift box. Shop Texas grapefruit.
